Many a time, maths is a subject that many children struggle with during school. It may be disappointing to your child when their school report shows as low achieving which can either push your child to stop putting effort in or struggle even more. The good news is that there are many things that you as a parent can do at home with your child to help them. It doesn’t need to be difficult or time consuming to have an impact on their studies. A child maths ability is not set in stone which is why parents should do their very best to help their child in practical ways. Here are some top tips for helping your child with their maths.

Ensure that your child’s basic skills are set in place. Skills such as addition and subtraction are the foundation to doing well in maths. If you find that one math skill doesn’t sink in quite well it can make the rest a lot more difficult to attain. This is what causes children to lose their confidence and fall behind. Speak to your child regularly about how they are doing in their lessons. Speak to your child’s teacher and see what can be done to help them if you are noticing them fall behind.

Like any other skill, maths needs practice. Maths is all around us to use day-to-day activities such as shopping and cooking to help your child work on their math skills. Your child can take time to practice money management and compare discounts. Allow them to indulge in different games that can help them work on their maths skills as well.

Help them to develop a healthy mindset. Having good self-belief and confidence alone will help your child to achieve better. Praise their efforts and not their performance as it is important to show that hard work is what matters most.
