Times to smile

I just wanted to post a very quick update to let you have a look at what I’ve been up to over the past couple of weeks rather than write about it.

Two attempts at inserting a PICC line failed; my veins are too small, but I still managed to start Gem/Carbo chemo on Tuesday.  The nurse found a vein at the second attempt so not bad at all. I’m mostly feeling tired so if it continues like this I can’t complain – it’s the nausea I hate, but so far the drugs have kept that in check.

I’ve posted a link so you can see all the pictures of the charity head shave and a link to a video that Miffy’s boyfriend put together for us.

There are also a couple of pictures of Tom and I in Spain. We had a fantastic time, and I hope all of these links and photos go some way to explaining why I won’t be giving up easily in the fight for my life. They are a reminder to me that although there have been some very dark times of late, light can still shine through. It is possible to recover from the blows, to get out of that hospital bed, to gain strength and to laugh again.  That’s what I’ll be trying to remember if the effects of the chemo take a turn for the worst. Enjoy….

I noticed on the donate page that your hairdresser might need slightly more hair for the wig, and saw this story

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2114873/Five-year-old-gets-haircut-time-Rean-Carter-sick-mistaken-girl-demands-chop.html

Just a thought but maybe you or your hairdresser could get in touch with paper and the family and see if they will donate, it looks like there is quite a lot of it to go around :)

In the meantime glad to see you looking fab and well done to Miffy, that’s what true friends are made of. xx

I realized today that it seems a shame not to tell you that I think of you often and have been sending many positive thoughts to you from here in the flat lands of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Hi Ellie,

I do a lot of research on nutrition and disease and there is a wealth of information on low carb diets and cancer on the internet. The idea is that if you eat low carb you keep your insulin levels low – this is important because insulin is a growth factor for cancer. Read the following articles to learn more:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-313227/Low-carb-diets-beat-breast-cancer.html

Hope this helps you in some way.

I have now read all of your blog! You are an inspirational and very brave lady. I truly admire your strength, your honesty and your overall positivity in the face of a very challenging set of circumstances.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom with the world. FYI I personally find a quote by Winston Churchill quite helpful sometimes whenever I am going through a really bad patch: “If you’re going through hell, keep going”.

It’s good to hear you are in good spirits again – it gives me hope that I will get there again soon.

The biggest contribution to my negativity at the moment seems to be my Consultant. Not what he’s saying but the way he is saying it and the lack of consistency. I know you changed Oncologist and was wondering whether you had any advice? I know you have so much on your plate but any advice would be good.

      Hi Clare,
I swapped oncologists for a variety of reasons – as you’ll have seen from reading the blog. If you think the problems you have with yours can’t be resolved then take a look around to get a second opinion. I can’t explain the weight that was lifted once I found a doctor I trusted. I asked on the Breast cancer care forum if anyone had any suggestions of good oncologists in the London area – Prof Stebbing was just one of the names that came up. A second opinion is your right. Best of luck x

Elli, you have the prefect figure. You could do wedding dress modeling to practice for your wedding. Trying on a different dress each week, we could vote on the best dress.

You are so talented with words. Keep writing no matter what. With such an experience and deep understanding of your illness, you might want to write for a health magazine. You could reach even more people.

You are in the best of hands. I pictured professor Hope a sixty something with thick glasses. He must be one of the brightest young scientists in his field.

I think your friend Miffy is amazing. I think those of us, perfect strangers, pulling for you we are here to celebrate you, your femininity, and your courage, and your presence here and now regardless of your occasional bad mood witch is natural. I think to face what you are facing requires superhuman endurance, great stamina and courage. I am happy for you being able to do that. I am here to learn from you.

I am sure that organizing a wedding is a sound idea. Planning a wedding makes one happy. A true wedding itself is simply a social event to signify that in your case is already there: that is a genuine loving relationship between two people. That is a very precious thing to celebrate. I think you are lucky to have the love of your life with you. You are already a great couple. And what a fantastic thing it is that you actually had found each other in the first place!

Really wishing you all the best with the next stage of treatment, Ellie. I am having the last Carboplatin chemo of 6 tomorrow and it has been incredibly effective thus far; like you, I had a very visible, bright red mass on my chest which just melted away after 2 sessions and a scan after 3 sessions showed that the tumours in my lymph nodes & bones had also gone. Even though I’m quite depleted, I feel much better after months of intravenous chemo than I did before treatment and I have been able to enjoy several breaks away (in between PICC line flushes – I too suffer from tiny veins!) I am also under Professor Hope.

I think your blog is amazing and very comforting for a fellow sufferer to read.

    Hey Ellie,
Ellie you are a courageous and strong woman,i admire you and thank God for using you to bless and encourage so many of us.We may not have cancer but trust me there are far much worse troubles facing a whole lot of us.When am almost down and out i always look up to you and am left with no option but to keep on going.
I recently lost my best grandma to throat cancer but moreso its because she was too old to undergo through this long chain of treatment.I know its a harsh path but I will keep you in my prayers Ellie because i believe there is nothing too enormous for God.
Keep on with the faith Ellie and God bless you.

    Grace,
    Nairobi-Kenya.

Wow, how do you do this? Where do you get this incredible spirit, and energy? I have never seen someone showing Cancer the finger so clearly as you do! Absolutely amazing!! As many already mentioned I can’t resist to agree that you look very beautiful with or without hair and what a true and selfless friend you have got who also looks beautiful without hair. I think what you do is very admirable and inspiring for all women!! I do work as a volunteer for the Look Good Feel Better charity which organises free make-up workshops in hospitals for cancer patients, does your hospital offer this service? If not would they be interested to set one up? Is there a project you are currently involved for Action Against Cancer that I can help with? Do you need any help with your bridal make-up? I am so happy my friend mention your story to me- you are the first blog I ever replied to, (and first Twitter I send to a complete stranger!! I just had to!)

Take care and wishing the best and more!!

    Parissa

your friend is a star! As are you. My mother died nearly 12 years ago, leaving me and my 2 younger brothers behind, one of whom was just 5 at the time. She too had your fighting spirit and I also cut & shaved her beautiful hair off. I know its not a positive story for you but her symptoms didnt show until it was too late but she gave it her all and you are too. Continue to believe as much as you can & have your down days – you need them – its normal to have them! Im wishing you and your hubby to be all the luck in the world and shall keep following your blog. xx
ps your friend really suits the short hair!! :)
